About Dagmara

Representative Dagmara Avelar is a community organizer and non-profit management professional elected in 2020 to the Illinois General Assembly, and is the first Latina to represent the 85th District.  Prior to her role as a legislator, Representative Avelar worked as the Director of Programs at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, leading the work of the largest naturalization and language access efforts in the state of Illinois: the New Americans Initiative and Immigrant Family Resource Program.

She was born in Ecuador and lived in the United States for more than 13 years as an undocumented American. She credits youth leadership development and civic engagement as her catalyst to fight for social, racial, and economic justice.
