BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — In continuation of her support for women’s rights and gender equality, state Rep. Dagmara Avelar, D-Bolingbrook, is encouraging all nonbinary and female-identifying young people in Illinois to apply for the Illinois Council on Women and Girls’ Girls Committee.

“Young people — especially young women — have unique perspectives that are often overlooked by policymakers,” Avelar said. “When we give these important young leaders a seat at the table, we come up with better policy solutions to our state’s most pressing issues.”

The Illinois Council on Women and Girls, chaired by Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, advises the Governor and the General Assembly on policy issues that impact women and girls in Illinois. Committee members will have the opportunity to share their experiences and viewpoints while learning from other Council committees. This opportunity is open to all high school-aged girls and nonbinary students across the state.

“Service on the Girls Committee is the perfect opportunity for civically-minded young people to learn about government and politics while making a difference in their state and community,” Avelar said. “The more diverse perspectives we have, the better off we are, so I encourage everyone who is interested to apply.”

Applications for the committee are due Oct. 23 and require a video submission as response to one of the questions. Applications can be submitted at https://isbe.submittable.com/submit/236836. For more information, contact Council member Jackie Matthews at jmatthew@isbe.net or 312-590-4327.
