BOLINGBROOK, Ill. – State Rep. Dagmara “Dee” Avelar, D-Bolingbrook, issued the following statement Wednesday after Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s annual budget address:

“The governor’s address underscores the need for us to pass a responsible budget that properly funds our schools, invests in public safety efforts to curb violence and ensures residents have access to the health care they need.

“We need to make sure we protect essential services that families depend on, including child care assistance and housing aid that helps keep people in their home. We must also make sure our schools have the resources they need to ensure our children receive a quality education in a safe learning environment for all students, staff and teachers.

“Families are rightfully concerned about violence in our community. That’s why I expect to see a comprehensive approach toward crime that properly funds our law enforcement and supports community organizations that target the root causes of violence.

“We are still facing a pandemic, and families will continue to be dealt challenges. It’s important that a balanced budget is crafted that preserves essential services families depend on, and invests in education, job training and other long-term priorities that will build a stronger Illinois.

“I look forward to reaction from the community on the governor’s proposal, and remain committed to working toward a spending plan that prioritizes our area.”
