Avelar Bill Delivers Senior Property Tax Relief
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Dagmara “Dee” Avelar, D-Romeoville, announced the passage of legislation expanding property tax relief for seniors on fixed incomes—delivering on her commitment to help older residents stay in their homes and age with dignity.
“When I first entered office, I promised our seniors, especially those living on fixed incomes, that I would fight to protect their ability to age in place with dignity,” said Avelar. “I said it would take time, and I meant it when I said I’m persistent. Today, we are keeping that promise.”
Avelar championed Senate Bill 642, which raises income eligibility thresholds for the Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption and the Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program. Under the new law, the maximum household income limit will increase from $65,000 to $75,000 in tax year 2026 and gradually rise to $79,000 by tax year 2028, ensuring more seniors qualify for relief. These changes help protect older adults from being forced out of their homes due to rising property taxes and inflation.
The expansion comes as seniors face increasing uncertainty amid a federal government shutdown and a volatile policy climate that threatens access to essential programs and benefits.
“With instability and confusion coming out of the federal administration, Illinois is stepping up,” Avelar continued. “We are making sure our most vulnerable residents have access to lifelines, nutritious food, reliable healthcare, and most importantly, the peace of mind that they can stay in their homes. That is what dignity looks like, that is what we are fighting for and I know that there's more we can do”
